Introduction to Behavioral Science in Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR)

Behavior plays a critical role in shaping health outcomes, treatment adherence, prevention, and healthcare decision-making. This course introduces key concepts from behavioral economics and behavior change science and examines how behavioral interventions can be evaluated within HEOR and value-based care frameworks. Learners will explore foundational behavioral models and theories, including the Biopsychosocial Model, Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the Health Belief Model (HBM), the COM-B Model, and resilience frameworks. Through real-world healthcare examples and intervention studies, the course demonstrates how behavioral determinants influence clinical outcomes and long-term health value. The course also examines the growing role of behavioral outcomes as meaningful endpoints in healthcare evaluation, highlighting the importance of engagement, habit formation, self-efficacy, and digital health technologies in driving sustainable behavior change and improving patient outcomes.

After the completion of this course participants will be able to:

    • Explain the role of behavioral science and behavioral economics in healthcare decision-making and HEOR.
    • Describe how health behaviors influence prevention, treatment adherence, chronic disease management, and long-term health outcomes.
    • Differentiate between the Biomedical Model and the Biopsychosocial Model in understanding health and illness.
    • Identify the core concepts and applications of major behavior change frameworks, including SCT, TPB, HBM, COM-B, and resilience frameworks.
    • Analyze how behavioral interventions are applied in real-world healthcare settings to support patient engagement and behavior change.
    • Evaluate the relationship between behavioral outcomes and clinical outcomes within HEOR.
    • Recognize the importance of behavioral endpoints, feedback systems, goal setting, and multicomponent interventions in driving sustained health behavior change.
    • Discuss the implications of behavioral science for value-based care, digital health, and future healthcare evaluation models.
